Creative Youth Community Development Initiative (CYCDI) in partnership with Covenant University will host the Global People’s Hub for the Global People’s Summit at the University’s Chapel on Saturday, September 22, 2018 during the United Nations General Assembly and enables interactive conversations via a digital platform.

The Global People’s Summit is the first-ever, fully immersive online summit that brings together thousands of global leaders and stakeholders from around the world to discuss solutions to global issues during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Streaming online from 7:30am-2pm ET on Saturday, September 22, 2018, the Global People’s Summit is an official part of the Global Goals Week schedule.

While access to high-level United Nations (UN) discussions are exclusive to world leaders, the Global People’s Summit leverages technology to give everyone a seat at the table and democratize access to information. In its second year, the online summit creates a space for real-time conversations that inspire and lead to innovative partnerships that catalyze action for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an agenda for global development established by the UN in 2015.

“The ambition, scale and scope of the Global Agenda adopted by world leaders in 2015 necessitate that it becomes everyone’s agenda, an agenda for us as individuals, for civil society, private sector, academia, local and national governments, international and faith-based organizations,” said Maher Nasser, Director of the Outreach Division of the Department of Public Information, United Nations. “We are always looking for ways to engage more people around the world in the work of the UN and generating awareness about and support for the SDGs. I welcome the opportunity to listen to input and ideas coming from those who want to be part of the conversation but are unable to be at the UN during UNGA,” he said.

Conceived and curated by Hazami Barmada, the Global People’s Summit is produced by the Humanity Lab Foundation, in partnership with the UN Office for Partnerships and the Office of the President of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly. After working at the UN where she forged creative partnerships to make the organization more accessible to people around the world, Barmada saw an opportunity to create a digital platform that would leverage technology and innovation to bridge the gap between access, opportunity and impact.

The theme for the 2018 Summit is “Reimagine Humanity: Changing the Status Quo,” and all content will tie directly into UNGA discussions and align with the SDGs. The goal of the Summit is to make the UN and international development more accessible to people around the world by leveraging creative campaigns, advocacy, and simplified content. The Summit will feature over 30 high-level speakers and influencers including government officials, senior UN officials, business leaders and global grassroots leaders. Topics covered will include humanitarian response, innovation, climate change, refugees, technology for good, inclusive financing, fighting hate and stigma, youth empowerment and gender equality.

At the Covenant University Global People’s Hub, the discussion will be centred on the hub’s theme - “Solve Global Issues, Take Local Responsibility”. Plenary discussions will focus on Decent Work and Economic Growth, Promotion of Health and Well-Being, Development of Innovation and Creativity and Application of the University’s Core Values to Achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in 2030, stated Foluke Michael, the CEO and Project Director of Creative Youth Community Development Initiative

Everyone is invited to share their thoughts and join the online summit using the hashtag #GlobalPeople and #UNGAatCU. All online conversations will be featured on the live Summit stream, during the live-show and also on an interactive display at the UN that will be set up from September 22-29, during the UN High-Level meetings.

The inaugural Global People's Summit in 2017 was organized in partnership with the UN Office for Partnerships, United Nations Foundation, +SocialGood initiative, United Nations SDG Action Campaign, United Nations Development Programme, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and EarthX, and had a digital reach of 84 million impressions in 163 countries.

The Global People’s Summit is a one-of-a-kind global virtual summit that brings together impact-driven individuals from around the world to explore, understand, design and co-create solutions the most pressing challenges. The Global People’s Summit is organized in partnership with the United Nations Office for Partnerships and takes place during the United Nations General Assembly as an official part of UN Global Goals Week.
